Advanced Book & Paper Repair Workshop

Circulating books falling apart? Knowing the proper techniques and right supplies is essential to maintaining a library collection. Building on the skills learned in the “Basic Book and Paper Repair” workshop, participants will learn more complex repair techniques. Attend this hands-on two-day workshop designed for library staff to learn how to perform advanced repairs on general (non-rare) library collections.

The workshop will include an overview of book structures, the various types of damage typically found in library collections, and repair options. Participants will also discuss the basic tools and supplies to set-up a book repair station and lab.

Each participant will practice a variety of advanced repair techniques during this hands-on workshop including:

·       Mending paper tears utilizing Japanese tissue and Filmoplast
·       Attaching loose pages with Japanese tissue
·       Replacing new end sheets with Japanese tissue
·       Recase a book in its original cover with new end sheets and spine linings

Participants: This 2-day workshop is designed for library staff members with experience in book repair and/or supervisors of book repair. Previous attendance at a Basic Book Repair workshop is recommended.

Instructor: Sharla Darby is currently a Senior Librarian with Tucson-Pima Public Library in Tucson, Arizona. She holds a specialization in preservation from the School of Preservation and Conservation Studies at the University of Texas and has taught book repair workshops throughout the Southeast and Southwest for Amigos, SOLINET, and the California Preservation Program.
