Visual and Digital Resources LibrarianThe Philadelphia Museum of Art seeks a highly qualified individual to manage, develop, and maintain the Museum Library’s growing digital collections and electronic finding aids, and to supervise the transformation of the current Slide Library into a Visual and Digital Resources Center. The Museum Library is poised to make an important physical expansion into new quarters in a renovated landmark building, that will also house important art collections, exhibition galleries, study centers and museum staff offices. The successful candidate will work closely with the Library Director and the Slide Librarian to determine priorities for digitization; to coordinate the creation and development of a digital image database; to select and acquire images from external sources; to create images in-house; to coordinate and participate in the development of metadata/cataloging standards for the images; to assist and train Museum curators and staff in use of the image database; to maintain XLST and CSS style-sheets for online publications, including EAD and METS files; and to assume responsibility for the slide collection. He or she will also collaborate with the Information Services Department to research, select and implement image management software; to develop cooperative solutions to image management and the maintenance of electronic finding aids; and to explore solutions for digital preservation. The Visual and Digital Resources Librarian is a grant-funded position with an expected duration of 2.5 years with possibility of renewal.Qualifications: MLS from ALA-accredited library school required; undergraduate degree in art history or humanities preferred. Three to five years experience managing visual collections in digital formats and electronic finding aids. Knowledge of image cataloging, digital imaging technologies, and metadata issues. Proficiency with software for the following: database development; image presentation, image creation, XML encoding; general computing applications including word processing, internet browsers, email, system software, and web authoring software. Strong project management skills, including the ability to initiate, track and manage multiple detail-oriented projects simultaneously. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team. Ability to train other in the use of new systems. Flexibility and versatility required for work in an evolving environment.
