Head Librarian

Founded in 1959, Phoenix Art Museum is one of America’s fastest growing
visual arts institutions. It is located downtown in the nation’s fifth
largest city. The award winning, 160,000 square foot museum building begins
a $35 million expansion in January 2005 to complete its 220,000 square foot
master plan. Phoenix Art Museum is a private, non-profit institution with an
operating budget of over $6 million. It employs approximately 100 people and
presents exhibitions from all over the world.

Phoenix Art Museum is seeking a Head Librarian to manage the Museum’s
Library Department and preserve and develop its collections. Duties will
include:

1.      Manage and supervise Library Department staff;
2.      Manage reference services;
3.      Teach research skills to Docents and Library Committee members, and lead
Library orientation to Museum staff, docents and the public;
4.      Manage acquisitions, periodicals, standing orders and subscription
programs;
5.      Administer Library Department budget;
6.      Publicize collection needs, advertise to donors on selection of
donations, solicitation of gifts and/or cash restricted for Library use, and
acknowledge receipt of gifts;
7.      Oversee cataloging and/or indexing of Library materials according to
AACR2, LCSH, USMARC, and LC classification systems, and standard indexing
formats;
8.      Supervise publications exchange, and duplicates disposal programs;
9.      Manage preservation and maintenance of Library collections;
10.     Register Phoenix Art Museum publications for Library of Congress
Cataloging in Publication, Books In-Print, Copyright, and ISBN numbers.

Required qualifications: M.L.S. (ALA-accredited school), B.S. in Art History
or equivalent experience, minimum eight years of library experience in
positions of increasing responsibility, excellent oral and communication
skills with minimum reading knowledge in one foreign language, experience
supervising staff and volunteers, proficient in Microsoft Office, internet
applications and email, and knowledge in text and electronic resources in
the arts.
