LISTSERV 16.5 - ARLIS-L Archives
We are considering asking MARBI and the MARC community for separate coding
for
subjects in a pictorial context. That is, current subject fields are
mostly for topical
considerations, not for visual depictions. For
example, a book ABOUT lions is not
the same as a picture of a lion or about a
leonine emblem that means Venice.
If you have a database for your VR collection (including use
of library OPAC
software), we would appreciate your answering the following
questions. We've
tried to make it yes/no questions but you may add
explanations if you wish.
* Do you have a subject field?
* Does it differentiate between a subject as topic and
subject as emblem? Does
subject ever appear as topic?
* If you
differentiate these types of subject, do you index them separately?
* If you
don't differentiate these types of subject, do you ever wish you
did?
* Do
you use a controlled vocabulary for iconography headings? LCSH?
AAT?
Iconclass captions?
And for those who share a database with a library:
* Would you like searchers to be able to search only
for images OF or only for books ABOUT a person or thing? Is it
currently possible to do so in your database? How?
