More than 100 years later, the Carnegie International is one of the most anticipated events in the art world, a bellwether of new art and artists from around the globe. Ethics, spirituality, scientific inquiry, free will, good vs. evil, these are examples of what curator Laura Hoptman calls "the Ultimates" and are some of the issues addressed in the exhibition. Thirty-eight artists have been chosen for the 2004-5 Carnegie International; some are leading figures internationally or in their home countries, others are notable newcomers at the beginning of their careers.
