Hello Jeanne, We're glad that ARLIS/NA wants to bring colleagues from Latin America to the annual conference, but how about encouraging our own library students from under-represented populations to become art librarians? It doesn't make sense, $28,500 to provide assistance for a few participants from Latin America who may or may not continue in the organization, versus $500 for one student who is interested in the profession and hopefully through their attendance and mentoring at the conference, can one day become a part of it (http://www.arlisna.org/diversity_award.html). We do not see this as an either/or choice, but feel that the allocation of funds is less encouraging than it could be for a new generation of art librarians, whom we would like to welcome warmly with generous support from our organization.
