Colleagues:

As your liaison for the Society of American Archivist (SAA), I wanted to share a bit of news from the annual meeting in Boston this past August.  A very informative session called "Managing Architecture and Design Records in Electronic Formats" offered a survey of current digital practices in architectural offices and firms, as well as recommendations for future production, collection and management.

One of the speakers, Kristine Fallon, has recently published the findings of her project's extensive research in this area.  The new publication Collecting, Archiving, and Exhibiting Digital Design Data written by Kristine Fallon and published by the Art Institute of Chicago, is now available on-line at:  http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/dept_architecture/ddd.html

 

Another speaker, Tawny Ryan Nelb of Nelb Archival Consulting Inc., recently stated that "the publication offers practical applications not only for collecting and preserving digital design materials but also for all digital materials in archives.  It is especially welcome advice for those of us trying to set up a digital archives of any kind.  Beyond the overall value of the advice, the case studies Kristine Fallon presents are wonderful and provide an overview of how analog and born-digital materials are used together in today's high tech firms to create and document the design.  This publication is worth a serious review by all of us."
