As the great rivals of the Aldine Press, the Giunti aggressively captured large portions of the lucrative governmental and Church's printing business. From their base in Florence and Venice, family members set up printing presses in Burgos, Salamanca, Madrid, Valladolid, Lerma and Lyons. In Spain they became printers to the most powerful King in the world and established "The Imprenta Real," changing their name to "Junta." The comprehensive, 700 page bibliography of the books they published while in Spain is annotated with more than 140 wood cuts of their ornate title page art, imprints, and other identifying ornaments. The text also features the genealogical charts of the family, library holdings, and a documentary chronology. The author, William Pettas, has researched this early printing family for over twenty years, and this is his second work on this important clan. The first true Renaissance printer, Colines worked with the finest French book decorators and type designers to transform the French book. By using the format pioneered by Aldus Manutius, his press (1520-1546) published reasonably priced "pocket" classics, making them affordable by students and popularizing italic and cursive types in France. Colines holds the distinction of having prepared the first critical text of the Greek New Testament, the first printed in France. He produced the earliest accented Greek type in France, fifteen years prior to the Grecs du Roi. In 1528, de Colines introduced an elegant cursive, derived from Arrighi, followed by a smaller italic based on the Aldine. The 230 books described in this work, one-third of Colines's actual production, illustrate de Colines's types, ornamental initials, printer devices and title borders. A catalogue of the books published and facsimiles of two of Colines's publisher catalogues are also included. Designed by W. Thomas Taylor. Illustrated. 1995, hardcover, 8.25 x 11 inches, 330 pages Order No. 042579 Price: $150.00 Click here for more information: http://www.oakknoll.com/detail.php?d_booknr=42579 <http://www.oakknoll.com/detail.php?d_booknr=42579&d> &d -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- For a list of all our new publications, click the following link: <http://www.oakknoll.com/publications.php> Oak Knoll Books 310 Delaware Street New Castle DE 19720 P: 302.328.7232 - F: 302.328.7274 - E: [log in to unmask] web <http://www.oakknoll.com/> http://www.oakknoll.com/ Member Antiquarian Bookseller's Association of America (ABAA) <http://www.abaa.org/> http://www.abaa.org/ International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) <http://www.ilab-lila.com/> http://www.ilab-lila.com/ Buy with confidence of consumer protection when you buy from an ILAB bookseller __________________________________________________________________ Mail submissions to [log in to unmask] For information about joining ARLIS/NA see: http://www.arlisna.org//membership.html Send administrative matters (file requests, subscription requests, etc) to [log in to unmask] ARLIS-L Archives and subscription maintenance: http://lsv.uky.edu/archives/arlis-l.html Questions may be addressed to list owner (Kerri Scannell) at: [log in to unmask]
