A few years ago the Amon Carter Museum library wrestled with the
slippery issue of what to do with our collection of library book
catalogs. At the time, I sent around an email to the curatorial staff
asking for their opinions regarding how we should treat them. By and
large, the feeling was that they were worth keeping for reasons being
cited in the current discussion thread on ARLIS-L (mainly
historiographical value and concern about how much of the material is
available online). We chose to keep them since our space allowed it.

Here's the edited text of my original message to our curatorial staff,
along with an inventory of the book catalogs we have in the library
collection with their online counterparts listed.

-----------------------------------

The library has a collection of book catalogs, i.e. book versions of
card catalogs, covering various special collections in both the U.S. and
Canada. These catalogs were produced primarily by G.K. Hall in the 60s
and 70s. We have debated off and on in the past about their usefulness,
but have yet to make a decision about keeping them.

I can count on one hand the times I have seen researchers use them, but
perhaps that is because they are not widely known. Some have been
cataloged in our online catalog, but the lion's share have not. In many
cases, they have been superceded by the institutions' online catalogs.
In fact, all of the institutions represented in the collection have
online catalogs in one form or another, but we have not made any
determination about how much of the material has made it into electronic
form. I guess my feeling is that we keep them, since my recent sweep
informed me that there's lots of pertinent information therein. They do
represent a commitment of space, as they are oversized volumes.

Last summer [name snipped] compiled a listing of libraries represented
in the collection and supplemented that information with URLs of online
catalogs. I have dusted off that document and added specific titles and
volume counts in the hopes it will help inform a decision.

Let me know what you think.
