Freshman Classes in College Skills
Greetings all!
First, please forgive me if this message is duplicated as I am sending it to two listservs.
The Atlanta College of Art is looking into setting up a mandatory course for all incoming students (transfers and freshmen) on library and research skills and other "college success" topics. I am very interested in what other colleges and universities do and would appreciate it if you could share information on the following with me:
- Do you offer a course similar to the one I've described above? A course different than the one I've described, but related in content?
- When is the course held? During the first term? Over more than one term? During Orientation Week?
- Who teaches it? To what extent is the library staff involved in the course/class?
- What topics are included in the course? Writing skills? Bibliographic instruction? Study skills? Ethics/plagiarism? Others?
- In what department is this course located? Who's "responsible" for it?
- How is success assessed? Are there assignments or is the content aligned with other courses? Is there a grade or a pass/fail? Is the course shown on the official transcript?
If other are interested, I will accumulate responses and post them to the listservs.
Many thanks in advance for your assistance.
Moira
