Tuesday morning, September 21, almost 500 tribal groups from North, Central, and South America will form a historic procession on the Mall in Washington, D.C., walking a mile from "The Castle" (the old Smithsonian building) eastward to the new National Museum of the American Indian, just below the Capitol building. The designers of the building (inside and out) and the gardens, as well as most of the professional and other staff are Native Americans and their policies vis a vis the acquisition and display of their collections are (in my opinion) models for museums everywhere.
