The Ohio Valley Chapter of ARLIS/NA invites you to join us October 14-15 for our fall chapter meeting in Marietta, Ohio, a charming and historic town on the banks of the Ohio River.  In addition to meeting with your colleagues from around the region, this will be a wonderful opportunity to see the fall colors of the Appalachian region of Ohio, to shop in the multitude of antique stores in Marietta, and view the historic architecture of Ohio's oldest town.  If you are adventurous and would like to extend your stay, there are lots of activities to pursue in the River Cities area of Ohio and West Virginia.  This is a great time to get out of the office and visit a special place!

9:30-10:30 Session 1: The Library Vertical File: Archaic Concept in a Digital Age?

Vertical file collections have been a mainstay of art libraries for many years, capturing ephemeral materials that might be lost otherwise and providing important information for researchers.  The downside of these collections is that they typically require a great deal of staff time to maintain, as well as lots of precious space in the library.  With the widespread availability of information on networks and the internet, has the need to maintain this traditional resource faded?  A panel of three librarians will discuss their current thoughts on working with vertical file materials.

10:40 – 11:25  Chapter Business Meeting

11:30 –12:30  Session 2:  ARTstor in Action

ARTstor is a non-profit initiative, founded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with a mission to use digital technology to enhance scholarship, teaching and learning in the arts and associated fields. With several hundred thousand images in its Digital Library, it has enormous potential for use in institutions that support a fine arts program. Gary Ginther, Fine Arts Librarian at Ohio University, will present an overview of ARTstor and its use by students and faculty.

12:45 - 2:15  Lunch at Oliver’s in downtown Marietta (203 Second Street)

2:30  Tour of Campus Martius Museum
