AASL Column Debuts in ASCA News The annual conference of the Association of Architecture School Librarians (AASL) in Miami last spring included a meeting with executive director Michael Monti of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). One outcome of that meeting was a proposal for an AASL column in ACSA News. The first column has now appeared in ACSA News 34:1 (September 2004), 26. It is an introductory column written by the column editor, Martin Aurand of Carnegie Mellon University. Current AASL Vice-President and President-Elect Matt Cook of Illinois Institute of Technology will write the second column as a follow-up to the "GIS and Architectural Education" session at the Miami conference. AASL expects to produce four columns per academic year. Columns will address the activities of the AASL and its members, and the shared educational mission of schools of architecture and their libraries. Topics may include AASL conference previews or reviews; AASL projects (e.g. the Core List of Periodicals); NAAB accreditation standards (e.g. proposals of the Joint AASL/ARLIS/NA Task Force); information literacy (successful programs and new initiatives); major tools and resources (e.g. GIS, ARTstor, Architectural Graphic Standards Online); digital projects (e.g. online image collections or journals); newsworthy collection acquisitions (e.g. of the archives of a prominent architect); and so on. Columns may address the activities of individual institutions (case studies), or discuss issues in architectural librarianship. Columns must be of potential interest to a broad constituency of faculty and schools. Whenever possible, columns should emphasize collaborative relationships between librarians, teaching faculty, and students. This column is a great new opportunity to communicate with teaching and administrative faculty and raise the profile of architecture librarianship. Architecture librarians are welcome to consider writing a column, even if not active in AASL. Please contact Martin Aurand at <[log in to unmask]> for more information.
