While the positive statement referring to " ... policies vis a vis the acquisition and display of their collections ... " as " ... models for museums ... everywhere," may be read as being distinct from the overall project management, I would note that one cannot have picked up a major Canadian newspaper in the past week and avoided an article or two dealing with the turmoil surrounding the Smithsonian and the original architect, Douglas Cardinal. The latter being fired and describing the final work as an "artistic forgery." "WASHINGTON - ... Museum director Richard West, who spent hours giving interviews yesterday, refused to take questions from CanWest News Service when he learned they concerned Mr. Cardinal." -- National Post, 16 September 2004, A10 Michael May Humanities and Social Sciences Library University of Alberta Edmonton, Alta., Canada, T6J 0M8 phone: 780-492-1411 fax: 780-492-5083 e-mail: [log in to unmask] -----Original Message----- From: Joan Benedetti [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: Saturday, September 18, 2004 1:51 PM Subject: National Museum of the American Indian Historic Opening Dear Colleagues: Tuesday morning, September 21, almost 500 tribal groups from North, Central, and South America will form a historic procession on the Mall in Washington, D.C., walking a mile from "The Castle" (the old Smithsonian building) eastward to the new National Museum of the American Indian, just below the Capitol building. The designers of the building (inside and out) and the gardens, as well as most of the professional and other staff are Native Americans and their policies vis a vis the acquisition and display of their collections are (in my opinion) models for museums everywhere. Their wonderful website has just posted a webcam for the procession that will be operating live on Tuesday morning (8-12 noon EST). Check it out at www.americanindian.si.edu.
