New BLAGO Archive: The Pillars of St. George Monastery

WASHINGTON-BELGRADE, Sep 17 2004 - The BLAGO (Treasure) Fund of the
Serbian Unity Congress is pleased to announce an addition to its on-line
archive of Serbian heritage. Along with virtual walkthrough - utilizing
Apple QuickTime VR technology - over two hundred high quality digital
images of frescoes and architectural details are available for examination
and study. Pillars of St. George Monastery (Djurdjevi Stupovi) is the
endowment of the Great Zupan (Ruler) Stephen Nemania from the year 1171.
The external appearance of this single-nave temple with a tripartite
sanctuary, a nave with lateral vestibules and a narthex, flanked by
two towers, emanates a spirit of western Romanesque building.

The recent rebirth of this holy place and new beginning of monastic life
after almost three centuries were the great joy for Orthodox world.
It has received much media attention in the last few years due to
high-profile fundraisers and appeals for restoration of the Monastery.

From 1979, Pillars of St. George are under protection of UNESCO
World Heritage Center as a part of Old Ras complex. The BLAGO team
archived the current state of the monastery, including the frescoes
and surrounding architecture. We hope this archive will support the
completion of restoration of the Monastery.
