MessageHi Tom,

Coincidentally, we are embarking on just such a project. We are cataloguing individual items from our manuscript collections directly into our OPAC. From the OPAC record we are linking to the image via an 856 field. The images are stored on the Museum's Webserver.

We felt that it was important to be able to directly link from the catalogue record in the OPAC to the image without having to search multiple databases. The Museum's database of collection images (when it is online) will be a seperate db not linkable to the library catalogue. We (the library) are committed to helping our users find as much information as possible while having to switch dbs as little as possible. To be honest, for us the decision was made that much easier by our financial situation - we already have the OPAC and couldn't afford software such as ContentDM.

Best,

Kraig

Subject: [ARLIS-L] images cataloged in OPAC

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who is cataloging images directly into an OPAC rather than using software such as ContentDM. We're looking at photographing and cataloging our collection of New Mexican santos, so would be curious about how you made the decision to use your ILS (or not) to catalog and store images. I'd especially like to hear from anyone who is using III Millennium--whether you decided to use III or another product for image collections.

  Thanks,

  Tom
