Dear Librarians,

As a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the appreciation,
dissemination, and understanding of artistsı publications, Printed Matter,
Inc. is always seeking new ways to bring public attention to the rich and
multifaceted history of the medium. We are extremely pleased to announce
that, to this end, we have teamed up with Martha Wilson, Founding Director
of Franklin Furnace, to make a historically important collection of
publications available to librarians and collectors worldwide.

Founded in 1976, the same year as Printed Matter, Franklin Furnace shares
our commitment to artists who have chosen to work with avant-garde,
non-institutionalized, democratic art forms. For ten years Franklin Furnace
published The Flue, a record of, and venue for, the dynamic work they
supported. Printed Matter is thrilled to offer ten copies of the complete
run of this unique artist-made document of a vital period of contemporary
art history. Housed in a slim Hollinger archival document case measuring 2.5
x 15.25 x 10.25 inches, the complete set of The Flue is available to
libraries at the special price of $275.

Published between 1980 and 1989, the sixteen issues of The Flue ran the
gamut of formats: from tabloids designed and illustrated by Barbara Kruger,
Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine and others, to posters and pamphlets, to
full-blown catalogues like Cubist Prints / Cubist Books. Then-emerging
artists Ana Mendieta and David Hammons created original works for the pages
of The Flue, as did artists who were invited by Regina Vater to augment the
exhibition, "Multiples by Latin American Artists." For this special offer
of the complete set of The Flue, the out-of-print Volume II, Number 2 has
been faithfully reproduced in facsimile. As bold and brilliantly colored as
the original, it features artistsı pages from Ann Fessler and Louise
Neaderland and reviews by Clive Phillpot and Shelley Rice among others.

To celebrate the release of this historic collection, rubber stamps designed
by performance artists participating in Franklin Furnace's 1988-89 season
will be emblazoned on the cases housing each complete set of The Flue.
Originally part of a project to cross-fertilize the audiences of artistsı
books and performance art, these designs were stamped in "passports" created
by Lawrence Weiner for members of Franklin Furnace. Each time a member
attended a performance, his or her passport was stamped with a rubber stamp
by that evening's performance artist. In honor of the continued
cross-fertilization of audiences, each Flue document case will be stamped
in archival ink with the work of Lisa Kotin, Deb Margolin, Susan Mogul,
Rafael Ortiz, Lawrence Steger, The Dark Bob, Sherman Fleming/Kristine Stiles
and others.

For full descriptions of each issue of The Flue included in the complete
set, please visit Printed Matterıs web site, www.printedmatter.org. You can
order the complete set of The Flue directly from the web site or by calling
(212) 925-0325. Please note that our earlier promotion of a 10% discount to
libraries who place and pay for orders before June 30, 2004 is still in
effect so that you can both add an important historical component to your
collection of artistsı publications and save money too!

Later in the summer of 2004, Printed Matter, Inc. and Franklin Furnace will
join forces again to offer a more comprehensive collection of printed matter
from Franklin Furnace: PRINTED STUFF. The collection will include the
complete run of The Flue mentioned above as well as historical, anecdotal
and visual documentation of Franklin Furnaceıs long and illustrious physical
publishing career before "going virtual" in 1996. The archival document
case housing PRINTED STUFF will be stamped with rubber stamps from
"pasports" project performance artists from the 1989-90 season including
Blue Man Group, Lambs Eat Ivy, Penny Arcade, Diane Torr, Roger Shimomura,
and Sha Sha Higby / Peter Van Riper. Only eight copies of PRINTED STUFF
will be offered, with a price still to be determined. Look for a more
detailed announcement soon!

Thank you very much. We look forward to hearing from you
