As a slide curator-turning-digital-image-curator, and a member of both the ARLIS and VRA communities, maybe I can offer a few comments. First off, all of these questions and many more are constantly and extensively addressed on the VRA list; the best general answer to any of these questions is probably "all of the above"! :-) Solutions (esp. money! ;-) ) vary from one institution to another; however, procedural standards are sought and followed.

So, for ARLIS members who are not directly involved with such collections in daily work, but are wondering about these kinds of things, I would suggest you start out by visiting the Visual Resources/Slides Curator(s) at your own institution, whether the collections are housed in your library, or in the art, archaeology or other departments. You can get answers to most of these questions from your own "resident expert(s)."

You can see first hand how the viewing spaces are set up and what equipment is already available there, hear whether the setups are considered adequate, what is being planned for the future, and how this compares to other institutions. You can learn (ask to be shown!) how the faculty at your institution actually use slides and/or digital images, and how this compares with others. You can learn what the policies are at your institution, and probably how this compares with others.

You will, in the process, be taking important steps in bridging the communication gaps that often exist between the various pockets of art education/information activities and expertise on your campus.

I would love to read some "reports" on this list from any ARLIS members who go on such an on-campus "fact-finding mission." First, I'd like to know whether the adventure was worthwhile--observations and comments would be very interesting. Secondly, what could both the ARLIS and VRA communities learn from this?

Have fun!

It seems that I have opened a Pandora's box -- I have already recieved many
responses that their institution is in the same situation as I...
... I think helping each other with such issues is the advantage of being an ARLIS member...

I would like any input (or advise) about how academic institutions are dealing with the following:
How visual collections that support Art History programs are handling slide collections and educating faculty into the transition of using digital images.
