I
will be attending the MARBI sessions at the annual meeting of ALA in
Orlando on June 26 and 27. Of the six papers on the agenda, only one
seems of interest to catalogers and/or special collections. This is Proposal
2004-07, “Applying Field 752 (Added Entry - Hierarchical Place Name) for
Different Purposes in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format.” The 752 field is widely
used by rare book catalogers to bring out the place of publication or printing;
other applications, such as online catalogs of graphic images, have used the
hierarchical geographic name structure of field 752 for a subject approach. Map
catalogers use it to bring out the countries depicted in maps; and it can also
be used to record the place of production and the place of use of 3-D artifacts.
The proposal discusses ways to distinguish between use for subject access and
use for access to publication, printing, and production
information.
Full
texts of all the papers are available at

Your
thoughts on this versatile field, or any other topic on the agenda, are most
welcome.
