Dear ARLIS-L,
Perhaps an ARLIS art librarian from one of the partner institutions
could recruit and mentor a fellow in this program.

The New CIRLA Fellows Program Launched: Recruiting for Diversity: Careers
in Librarianship

APPLICATIONS DUE BY JULY 1, 2004
http://CIRLAFellows.georgetown.edu <http://cirlafellows.georgetown.edu/> .

Applications are now being accepted for the CIRLA Fellows Program, a joint
project of the Chesapeake Information and Research Library Alliance (CIRLA)
and the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). The program is the result
of a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and
provides 13 people from diverse or underserved populations with the
educational, experiential and financial means to enter the field of research
librarianship.

The three primary goals of the program are to: increase the diversity of the
profession, particularly among academic libraries; recruit the next
generation of librarians to fill the numerous anticipated vacancies over the
next ten years; and train and educate new librarians in functional
specialties needed by research libraries.

Fellows will be chosen from two constituencies: students currently enrolled
in or accepted to graduate library school programs; and pre-professionals
currently employed by a CIRLA library. Applicants must be able to
demonstrate an ability to contribute to the diversity of the library
profession, either by being a member of a traditionally underserved ethnic
or racial group, or by otherwise demonstrating contributions to diversity
based on background or experiences.

The program combines active work experience, on-the-job experience and
workplace assistance from expert librarians, in addition to professional
career mentorship from the Association of Research Libraries. Some Fellows
will be given part-time employment, and all will receive extensive
workplace-related training, mentorship and career development.

Following the successful completion of the MLS degree, each fellow will be
provided with a one-year full-time professional position in one of the CIRLA
libraries launching them into the profession with experience and mentorship
not only at the pre-professional level, but also beyond.

Applications are now being accepted, and are due by July 1, 2004. For
complete application information and forms go to
