CALL FOR PAPERS
COLLEGE ART ASSOCIATION, Atlanta, February 16-19,
2005
Sponsor: The
Society for the Study of Early Modern Women
The Face of Gender: Women and Portraits in the
Early Modern World
Organizer: Andrea G. Pearson, Bloomsburg
University of Pennsylvania
A major
objective of current scholarship on early modern portraits is to illuminate the
role of such images in social transactions, particularly in regard to
self-fashioning and self-advancement. This session interrogates a subcategory
of this subject: the manipulation of portraits of and by women to test,
fissure, and renegotiate the boundaries of gender. Possible areas of
investigation include pictorial content, artistic formats, reception, and strategies
for collecting, display and gifting; papers that address the production and use
of portraits of men by women, and of women by men, are also encouraged. Send a
one-page abstract and c.v. by June 30 to Andrea Pearson at [log in to unmask]
