Someone inquired about who was archiving comic strips but I had deleted it before looking at the new issue of Archival Issues: Journal of the Midwest Archives Conference that just arrived. The article by Amy McCrory, "Archiving newspaper comic strips: the San Francisco Academy of comic art collection" appears on pp. 137-150 of v. 27 no. 2 (2002!), and describes the project at the Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library.
