Professional Development for Managers of Digital Collections

Museums, Libraries and Archives:
Summer Institute for Knowledge Sharing

Hosted by the Graduate School of Library and Information
Science, Simmons College

Boston
July 12-15, 2004

Early registration deadline extended to June 1, 2004.

More and more professionals in museums, libraries, and archives
are called upon to create, manage, disseminate, and preserve
digital collections. Information specialists, registrars,
librarians, archivists, curators, researchers, and educators
are now paying close attention to issues such as: articulating
visions; identifying needs, including funding; nurturing
professional expertise; collection development and evaluation;
metadata creation and standards; workflow re-engineering,
staffing, and asset management; re-conceptualizing collection
delivery and user interaction; and integrating end-to-end
preservation. These demands, as well as the increasing
convergence between museum, library, and archive practices and
perspectives in the digital environment, require new
educational and networking opportunities that transcend the
boundaries traditionally separating these fields.

The Summer Institute for Knowledge Sharing provides an
intensive four days of instruction and dialogue for those
involved with digital collections in museums, libraries,
archives, and other cultural heritage institutions. Through
lectures, group discussions, and exercises, participants will
be immersed in the issues and decision points that institutions
face in the acquisition, management, dissemination and
preservation of digital collections. Special attention will be
paid to the increasing convergence of practices and
perspectives across institutional contexts in the digital
environment. Experienced and knowledgeable instructors from
across the country lead attendees from around the United States
and abroad.

After five years in Los Angeles, this year’s Summer Institute
will take place at Simmons College, a nationally distinguished
small university in the heart of Boston, where it will take
advantage of the city’s rich intellectual, cultural and
professional resources. In addition to course work,
participants will take part in events designed to complement
their instruction including, luncheons, and a visit to, and
reception at the beautifully restored Massachusetts Historical
Society.
