At the April 18 convocation of the
ARLIS/NA conference in New York City, Florence DaLuiso-Zoll was honored as
a "proto-charter member" of the Society. The week-long institute for Art
Libraries and Visual Collections at SUNY Buffalo that Florence organized and
directed in June 1969 was a direct forerunner of the Art Libraries Society of
North America which was founded in 1972.
Florence was unable to be
present for the occasion, but the certificate honoring her will be sent to
Buffalo. ARLIS/NA is making a donation "In Honor of Florence DaLuiso-Zoll"
to the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, 2655 South Park Avenue,
Buffalo, NY 114218. Florence was for many years a great supporter of
the Botanical Gardens, and was at one point influential in saving them; a wing
of the building at the Gardens is named in her honor.
If you know Florence, we
hope that you'll consider making a personal donation to the Gardens in her
honor, in addition to the donation that ARLIS/NA is sending.
The presentation of
the tribute to Florence at the convocation was made jointly
by:
Wolfgang Freitag, retired director of the Fine
Arts Library at Harvard University
and Bill Walker, retired chief librarian of
the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Both Wolfgang and Bill
were on the faculty of the 1969 Buffalo Institute.

published an account of the events leading up to the Institute in v. 7 no. 3 of
the ARLIS/NA Newsletter, May 1979. In addition to a description of
the Institute's program, Florence noted the importance of Judith
Hoffberg's investigation of the newly organized Art Libraries Society
(ARLIS) in the United Kingdom, and Judy's instigation of the founding
of the ARLIS/NA we know and love, three years after the Buffalo
Institute.
Copies of the article were
distributed at the convocation.
