The Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals Announces its Inclusion of the Burnham Index to Architectural Literature

Terence Ford, Head of Research Databases, Getty Research Institute, Kitty Chibnik, Acting Director, Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library, Columbia University, and Jack Perry Brown, Director, Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, The Art Institute of Chicago, are pleased to announce that the Burnham Index to Architectural Literature is now part of the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals.

The 10-volume Burnham Index, never-before available online, has been retrospectively converted and integrated into the Avery Index database.

60,000 new citations to articles covering the years 1883 to the mid-1960s have been added to the Avery Index, and nearly 10,000 Avery records have been enhanced with additional information.

The Burnham Index indexed 214 serials. There is a 30% overlap in serial coverage with the Avery Index for the period after 1934, when the Avery Index began and a 3% overlap before that date. Monographic and scrapbook material included in the 10-volume set was omitted in the conversion.

The entries from the Burnham Index add substantially to coverage of  Midwestern materials and include a number of serial titles that were indexed retrospectively to their beginnings. Titles such as Chicago Architectural Club Annual, Metalcraft, Prairie School Review, Wendingen and Vogue, will provide users with unsurpassed access to architectural information.

Avery Index users will notice two changes:
1.      The Burnham call number is recorded if the journal is available at the Burnham Library and not at Avery.

2.      A (MARC 590) field has been added to updated Avery records with the words "Burnham Index Recon" so users will know that additional information has been added.

Keyword searching is advisable due to variations in subject, name and building headings.

The Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, is published by the J. Paul Getty Trust and is edited at Columbia University. The conversion project was supervised by Ted Goodman, General Editor, Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals and Mary K. Woolever, Archivist, Ryerson & Burnham Libraries.

The Avery Index is available through: RLG (www.rlg.org); NISC (www.nisc.com) and Ebsco Publishing (www.epnet.com)
