The University of Chicago Press Now Publishes American ArtThe University of Chicago Press Journals Division is pleased to announce that it has assumed publication of American Art, the scholarly publication of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Beginning with the March 2004 issue the Press assumed printing, publishing, promotion, marketing, sales, and distribution of the journal in addition to launching an expanded online edition.
Published three times a year, American Art remains a leading forum and resource for scholars of American art and culture. Edited by Cynthia Mills, American Art is dedicated to the study of America's visual legacy, spanning from colonial to contemporary eras and all media from painting and sculpture to photography, architecture, and fiber art. The journal is distinguished by its rich, color illustrations, and its engaging style and plain language that make it not only accessible to specialists in the field, but students and an educated general public as well.
The peer-reviewed journal, which benefits from the guidance of a prestigious editorial board, was founded by the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 1987, and was initially published under the title Smithsonian Studies in American Art. Though the journal is now published through the University of Chicago Press, it maintains its editorial affiliation with the Museum and is unchanged in content and appearance.
