Dear Allen and colleagues,
Let me echo a bit of both Miguel's and Jeri's concerns when I ask why we
are dissolving some committees and sections and not others. Looking
through the last directory of members, I noticed many who listed
themselves as public librarians, albeit fewer than the two biggest groups
of academic and museum librarians. Since some committees were
dissolved not from lack of interest and others were allowed to survive
even with small numbers, we are obviously making choices for other
reasons. Perhaps we, the entire membership, should examine the
reasons. I don't believe that an organizational structure has to
survive intact for decades. The Strategic Plan Task Force will be
thinking about this.
For me what Miguel was alluding to is that ARLIS/NA may need to be a more
transparent organization and give a more welcome face to some individuals
than it has in the past. I have found this to be a good
organization to belong to and a group I look forward to seeing as Roberto
says. But always organizations must evolve. We hope to question the
membership, see where its going, and find a consensus that can lead us
into a new millennium without losing some of the good we created in the
last one.

Dear
ARLIS/NA Colleagues,
On Sunday, April
18, 3:30-4:30 PM, during the upcoming Annual Conference, a Public
Library Forum has been programmed for the purpose of gathering
feedback from the membership on the subject of public librarians and
their future role in the Society. Suzy Frechette and other members
of the Executive Board will be present to discuss the recent dissolution
of the Public Libraries Division, as well as the possibilities for
raising the profile of public librarians within the administrative
structure of ARLIS/NA. Suzy and I would also welcome online ARLIS-L
discussion in advance of the Conference event, for those who will not be
able to attend the NYC meeting.
Looking forward to seeing many of you
soon!
Best regards,
Allen
