"On the Dieter Roth Road" - words on
Dieter Roth by Jan Voss
with video material recorded by H.
van Egten
"It was the quintessence of his
'road show' to
permanently invent the world, and to
demand for
this invention both names; that of
reality, and that of art."
Jan Voss, speaking of Dieter Roth
Santa Monica
Museum of Art is honored to present Jan Voss of Boekie Woekie,
Amsterdam.
Please join
us on Tuesday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m., for an illustrated lecture by Voss about
his mentor and "fatherly friend," the legendary artist Dieter Roth.
Voss first
met Roth in 1967 as a student at the Academy of Art in Dusseldorf. The two
remained close friends from that time forward, meeting, as Voss would say, “more
or less without appointment—in Iceland, Amsterdam, Berlin, Stuttgart, Chicago,
Zurich, Paris, or Basel.”
This lecture
is arranged by SMMoA to coincide with the opening of Roth Time: A Dieter Roth
Retrospective, on view from March 12 to June 14 at The Museum of
Modern Art and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York.
Originally organized by the Schaulager, Basel, Switzerland, Roth Time offers a
rare opportunity for American audiences to experience first hand the five-decade
gesamtkunstwerk of this iconoclastic
giant.
One of the
defining moments in Roth’s artistic career took place in Los Angeles in May 1970
with Staple Cheese (A
Race) at the Eugenia Butler Gallery. Artists Eugenia Butler and
Richard Jackson will be present on March 23 to add their personal perspectives
about that unprecedented experience.
We invite
you to attend this extraordinary event—a unique opportunity to gain insight into
the life and work of a master whose vast creative output encompasses and
foreshadows almost every genre of contemporary art.
This event
is sponsored by Deutsche Bank Private Wealth
Management.
A limited
selection of books and cards by Boekie Woekie will be available for
