are pleased to announce that Rosemarie Chiarlone of Miami Beach, FL, is the winner of the 2003 Florida Aritsts' Book Prize of $2,000.
The award ceremony and a lecture by the winning artist will be held at 7 p.m. on March 18th in the Bienes Center for the Literary Arts, 6th Floor, Broward County Main Library, 100 S. Andrews Ave., Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Chiarlone's book, entitled "Residue," was selected by the jury as a perfect example of an artists' book: the subject is clearly presented in an innovative, original and consistent style and the materials reinforce and reiterate the message and theme.
"Reside" is a bed-shaped book with two small pillows and a cover sheet on the front. Inside are twelve folded pillow cases with a hand-embroidered poem by Susan Weiner. The materials used in the book are cotton sheeting, cotton thread, buttons and elastic. It is an edition of three: one in English, one in Spanish, and one in French.
Chiarlone attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Florida International University and lives in Miami Beach, Florida. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad, and has received numerous awards, including the 2002 Florida Artists' Book Prize, and an Artist Access Grant from Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and Tigertail Productions. Her works are included in a number of prestigious collections.
The winning book and other selected entries from the 2003 Florida Artists' Book Prize competition will be on display in the Bienes Center from March 18 through May 31. A complimentary exhibit checklist is available upon request.
The Florida Artists' Book Prize was established in 1997 by Broward County Library's Bienes Center for the Literary Arts and the Florida Center for the Book. The jury for this year's competition were: Arthur Jaffe of the Mata and Arthur Jaffe Collection: Books as Aesthetic Objects at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL; Barbara Young, Art Services Librarian at Miami-Dade Public Library; and Ruth and Marvin Sackner of the Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry in Miami Beach. The judging was facilitated by Jean Trebbi, former director of the Florida Center for the Book, and James A. Findlay, Bienes Center librarian.
