The thematic umbrella for next year's national gathering is "Beyond
Borders: Collaborative Ventures in Art Information." There could be no
better venue for thinking about-and looking at-collaboration,
contradiction, integration, and compromise, than Houston, Texas.

Beyond the doors of the conference hotel in the vibrant downtown--with
event planning coordinated by program co-chairs Laura Schwarz and
Elizabeth Schaub--our 2005 conference city will offer us museums
encyclopedic and intimate, a raft of architectural gems, and the chance
to see where the energy and raw materials for our late industrial age
originates. Margaret Culbertson will be putting together tours,
orientations and guides to the metropolis that itself thrives on mixed
use, exudes jumbled demographics, and offers surprises at every turn.
Mark Pompelia and Jon Evans will collaborate as Local Arrangements
co-chairs.

We'll try to hint at some of the contradictions and collaborations in
upcoming messages to the list, and let you know what to look for in
Houston's museums, performing arts, higher education, transportation,
sports, industry, and yes--libraries. Laura and Elizabeth suggested
some paths for thinking about program proposals in the latest Arlis
Update, available on-line on the members' portion of the website
(http://www.arlisna.org/memberlink.html).

You might also look at the March 2004 ArtNews for a five page "City
Focus" article on Houston by local reporter Catherine Anspon.

For now, please "save-the-dates," March 31 to April 6, and be thinking
outside the box and around the boundaries for presentations, panels,
workshops and tours.
