Janine,
I am an MLS student at UNC-Chapel Hill and a member of ARLIS. While
the student awards are a great incentive, the conference itself takes place
during the week of classes before final projects are due. Many of us are
wishing we could attend, lamenting the lost opportunity, but staying to finish
our classwork.
I'd love to go to the conference, but it isn't possible this year.
Thanks for your interest,
Christine Scoggins Granquist

ARLIS/NA
Francesca, et al.,
Check out:
http://www.arlisna.org/chapters2001.htm.
You'll
see that there are ARLIS/Canada,
ARLIS/Montréal-Ottawa-Québec
and ARLIS/Ontario
chapters in the Canadian Region, as well as an
ARLIS/Northwest (that includes Alaska - Alberta -
British Columbia -
Idaho - Oregon - Washington -
and the Yukon Territory) in the
Western Region.
Some provinces have not formed chapters simply
because
of the lack of enough members, which is
also why there is a general
Canadian chapter.
You might want to sign up for CARLIS-L if you
have
not already done so.
I'm just curious---are you (& other student
members) finding the stipends offered by the
various conference travel
awards inadequate? Or
is the information about these awards not
getting
disseminated to your library schools? Or are the
award
application deadlines too far away from the
conference for the
announcements to be paid
attention to? (Or are there other
obstacles?)
The 2004 ARLIS/NA travel award information is at
http://www.arlisna.org/travel04.html,
but of
course many chapters also have travel awards.
I'll be the
incoming chair of the Membership
Committee after the NYC conference so am
particularliy interested to hear what students
have to say about
issues that affect their
decisions to join and their abilities to attend
conferences while students. Please keep the
comments coming and
rest assured that we are
listening!
Hoping to see many of you
soon,
Janine Henri
