The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world's finest museums, seeks a
department head to assume all administrative responsibilities relating to
the Photograph and Slide Library's collection of art images of nearly one
million and direct the department's staff of over twenty.

Successful candidate will be charged with establishing departmental policies
and priorities concerning the Museum's transparencies, black-and-white
photographs for sale and reproduction, and the collection of circulating
slides of works of art, architecture, and archaeology. You will envision,
set goals and lead the implementation of the eventual digital dissemination
of the department's collections; approve all significant image acquisitions,
including gifts and purchases; formulate and manage the department's annual
budget, including income, expenditures, and special funds; manage and
develop the department's staff; streamline departmental processes and
procedures according to modern technological standards and in alignment with
the goal of digitalization; control regulations for rights and reproductions
and govern applicable fees; guide the department's participation in
acquiring images and budgeting specifically for loan exhibitions; oversee
all aspects of technology planning for the image collections; work with the
department's professional staff in formulating plans for conversion of the
35mm analog collections to digital; cultivate donor relationships and
develop avenues of support for the department; oversee application of
established classification systems for the slide images; and other duteis as
necessary.

REQUIREMENTS: 10 or more years of senior level administrative experience in
the management and development of an image collection and in rights and
reproduction including budget management. M.A. in Art History with courses
beyond the M.A. most favorably considered.  Must demonstrate the ability to
conduct multiple operations and direct a large staff. Knowledge of one or
more western European foreign languages and knowledge of current and new
technologies in order to plan conversion of analog collections to digital in
anticipation of digital distribution with relevant permissions are
essential. Overall familiarity with imaging technology and experience with
Microsoft Office, Photoshop, and Powerpoint required. Color acuity for
images of works of art and basic understanding of traditional and digital
photographyis necessary.  Excellent knowledge of the history of art is
essential. Exceptional communication, interpersonal, organizational,
multi-tasking and presentation skills  are keys to success.
