Hi BJ:

I agree and you said it better than I. That contact to the local LIS
programs should be made through the chapters and that chapter members
excited about what ARLIS is doing should be the ones talking to LIS students
and promoting recruitment.

I was able to attend chapter meetings in 2002 and 2003, and the national
meeting in 2003. Unfortunately do to the cost and timing I cannot attend
the national this year. Cost is definitely an issue with struggling grad
students. It was very exciting though to meet other LIS students at the
national last year. So again I am a big fan of a national student section
which would really pull LIS students together and give them an opportunity
to communicate on a regular basis. It would be really nice to be able to
relay some of the issues and problems within the LIS programs for such a
specialized field of librarianship.

This is an interesting idea but you would still need contacts at every
library school to maintain the network. I think it might also have some
of the same problems that Alba mentions below in starting individual
student chapters. What might be more practical is to have each chapter
network with their local/regional library schools to be sure that students
know about chapter membership, meetings, activities, projects, etc.
From my perspective, an important strength of ARLIS/NA has always been
and is its various chapters located throughout North America. Generally,
students have attended our Midstates meetings and this is an excellent way
for students to network at the regional level within a relatively
inexpensive meeting environment. BJ Irvine, Fine Arts Library, Indiana
