I ran these ideas by several Diversity Committee members and they were supportive. :-) -- Miguel -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kathy and Judy: How about a special issue of Arts Doc focusing on various aspects of Diversity in ARLIS/NA as an organization and in the profession, addressing ethnicity, gender and class? Some topics/themes to explore: How does class affect art librarianship and the types of art librarianship members engage in? Has the work and the profession changed over time? How does one prepare to work in certain areas? Who goes into the profession? How many women are in the organization, in the profession? How many men? What is the ethnic make up of the organization? What is the percentage of lgbt persons in the organization? Change dynamics in the organization: some want to maintain the organization as is; others want to change it--who is right? Organization dynamics & stages: various labels and identities exist for ARLIS/NA as an organization: a multitude of social cliques, social and affinity circles, "the I hate ARLIS crowd," the "these people are like family" phenomenon. Organizational stage of the organization--where is ARLIS/NA today as an organization? Issues in mentoring and management in the profession: Who is mentoring art librarians these days? How does one become an art manager or director? Privilege in art librarianship: Are people privileged by gender, class or ethnicity? Why or why not? Writing from points of view from other 'minorities' in the organization? i.e. Heterosexual males? In keeping with our policy of planning two issues ahead, at this point /AD/ editors are seeking authors and articles for the Fall 04 and Spring 05 issues. If you are presenting a paper at the conference that lends itself to publication as well; if you have an idea for an article that you would like to discuss; if you have an innovative project that you would like to share with your colleagues; if you are passionate about issues pertaining to the future of our profession, consider writing about it for /Art Documentation/. Co-editors Judy Dyki and Kathy Zimon will be in New York from April 14-20, and would love to hear from you. Although scheduling may not permit us to attend every session, we try to attend as many events as possible, and we are always available to meet with potential authors during the conference, so please don't hesitate to get in touch. We also encourage interested members to attend the /Art Documentation /Editors meeting (following Publications Committee Meeting on Saturday, April 17, 5:30-7 pm).
