Press Covers PATRIOT Act Petition Drive

The PATRIOT Act petition drive has attracted a lot of attention from
newspapers around the country. Newspapers in Cleveland, Boston, Denver,
Seattle, Hartford, Pittsburgh, Lowell, Massachusetts and Portsmouth, New
Hampshire, have run stories that in many cases have included interviews with local booksellers. The best story so far ran in the Boston Globe on March 9.
It looks at how the campaign is faring across the nation. To read it, click here

er/>. Click here <http://news.bookweb.org/freeexpression/2282.html> to read an editorial on the issue.

The American Booksellers Association has recommended that booksellers who are circulating the petition consider sending a press release to their local media. It has posted a sample release that can be easily adapted by any store here <http://news.bookweb.org/freeexpression/2289.html>.

Eager to Help, Customers Flood Local Bookstores

Not only have booksellers enthusiastically taken to the Campaign for Reader Privacy, but customers have joined in the grassroots efforts as well. "We have gone through so many pages [of the petitions] that we need to order more petition pads," reported Linda Leehman, a bookstore manager in Vermont.

PATRIOT Act Amendments Continue to Gain Support Across the Nation

As reported in last month's update, efforts to clamp down on the vast powers of the PATRIOT Act have been underway for over a year. In that time, four states (Maine, Vermont, Alaska and Hawaii) and 273 local communities have past ordinances, resultions and ballot initiatives supporting changes to the PATRIOT Act.
