Temporary Art Librarian
Fine Arts Department

SUMMARY

Syracuse University Library has an immediate opening in its Fine Arts Department for an energetic, team-oriented librarian to provide reference and instructional services in the fine arts, design, film and photography. Conducts user education sessions and assists with projects and other assigned duties. Reports to the Head, Fine Arts Department. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides reference services at the Fine Arts Department reference desk, a dynamic electronic/print environment in which staff assist and instruct library users in locating and interpreting the Library's information resources. 

Assists and offers consultation to students, faculty and visiting users about the collection and their research needs. 
Works with the Head, the Library Instructional Program and Reference Department in providing library instruction sessions.
Develops subject specific, web-based reference and instructional materials in collaboration with the Head, Fine Arts Department.
Reference responsibilities include rotating evening and weekend shifts at the Fine Arts Department reference desk.
Assists with projects and related duties as assigned.
Resources include SUMMIT, the online catalog; over 400 Web-accessible, CD-ROM, and other databases. 
Library collections comprise approximately three million volumes. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: Graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program (or MLS degree pending 2004); demonstrated knowledge or interest in art history, fine arts, film, design or photography.
The Library will appoint a candidate with the best combination of the following qualifications:
ˇ     An undergraduate or MA degree in art history, fine arts, film, design or photography. 
ˇ     Demonstrated understanding of information needs of visual arts scholars and the application of information technologies in serving these specialized areas. 
ˇ     Excellent interpersonal, and oral/written communication skills. 
ˇ     Demonstrated ability to work collegially in a complex work environment. 
ˇ     Ability to use full range of traditional and electronic resources in the arts and related disciplines. 
ˇ     Knowledge of web page development. 
ˇ     Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with a broad range of patrons. 
ˇ     Energy and enthusiasm for reference service. 
ˇ     Working knowledge of one European language. 

PAYRATE
$16.92 an hour
