Job Description:
 
Produce original cataloging, classification, and subject indexing of slides and other visual images in analog and digital formats, as the Library's sole expert in image cataloging. The Slide Collection consists of over 360,000 slides and an increasing number of digital images primarily in the areas of art, architecture, and related subjects. Participate in developing and maintaining the Library's visual image collection through the acquisition of new images and the conservation of existing images. Oversee operational aspects of the visual image collection including access, circulation, user assistance, user instruction, and collection maintenance. Supervise student employees who work in the visual image collection. Reports to the head of the Fine Arts Department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Produce online original descriptive cataloging, classification and subject indexing for slides and digital images in consultation with the head of Fine Arts and/or the Catalog Librarian as appropriate. 
 
Research and establish preferred metadata for creator names, object titles, location names, medium, sites, and techniques using online and hard copy authorities. 
 
Research and verify name, subject, and other headings so that these headings will conform to appropriate international authority files. 
 
Maintain and supervise the authority control work over all cataloging so that individual records conform to national standards. 
 
Review work of other image catalogers as needed; identify problems/errors in the Library 's visual images database and/or other visual image catalog records, and refer or correct these errors as appropriate. 
 
Collaborate with the Catalog Librarian and others in the Library's Bibliographic Services Division as appropriate to ensure the maintenance of consistent cataloging standards. 
 
Monitor and participate in the digitization, formatting and manipulation of images for teaching and research purposes; collaborate, consult, and manipulate images to meet established quality standards. 
 
Assist Head of Fine Arts and Catalog Librarian as needed to establish local procedures for the cataloging of images in all formats. 
 
Document local procedures for cataloging images in all formats. 
 
Assess and recommend changes when needed in workflow, procedures, and production methods for cataloging visual images. 
 
Resolve complex problems relating to cataloging visual images. 
 
Keep relevant staff apprised of current local procedures for visual image cataloging. 
 
Preserve and maintain the collection by updating catalog records, repairing slides, and replacing images. 
 
Record, report, and analyze slide and image statistics using Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel. 
 
Collaborate with head of the Fine Arts Department and campus photographer to accomplish weekly assignments, fill faculty requests, and complete special projects. 
 
Consult with the head of the Library's Fine Arts Department and with the faculty to determine new visual acquisitions. 
 
Understand and interpret technology and copyright issues such as copy photography and digitizing of images as they apply to visual image collection policies. 
 
Participate in the long range planning for digitization and automation of image collections and services. 
 
Manage circulation operations for the slide and image collections. 
 
Maintain an organized and orderly environment for the creation, processing, cataloging and viewing of visual resources by patrons. 
 
Train and supervise student employees. 
 
Train all staff who catalog slides and/or images, collaborating with Catalog Librarian as needed. 
 
Assist patrons with the slide/image collection and provide orientation tours of the collection to new faculty and users. 
 
Assist the head of the Fine Arts Department in related tasks that contribute to the successful operation of the Slide and Image Collection. 
 
Provide reference service for Library patrons at the Fine Arts Reference Desk on a rotating schedule. 
 
Maintain currency in related areas and keep relevant staff informed and up-to-date with emerging national trends in visual image cataloging and related practices. 
 
Participate in Fine Arts department strategic planning. 
 
Contribute to departmental planning, activities, and support services as needed. 
 
Participate in continuing education, professional development, and training activities.    
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 
Bachelor's degree in art history, design, or architecture or closely related field. 
Minimum one year cataloging experience. 
Minimum one-year digital image experience (interpreting, manipulating, organizing, managing images). 
 
AND best combination of the following: 
Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language; western European language strongly preferred. 
 
MA in art history, design, or architecture or related subject. 
 
MLS or equivalent degree. 
 
Experience cataloging visual images. 
 
Working knowledge of cataloging, classification systems such as Iconclass, VRA core, Library of Congress, and Getty Institute authority files (ATT, AGN), etc. 
 
Working knowledge of image management and relational database programs and web applications. 
 
Familiarity with digital standards and current digital environment. 
 
Demonstrated research and organizational skills. 
 
Excellent proofreading skills and superior attention to detailed work. 
 
Ability to manage a variety of assignments in a timely fashion such as meeting weekly deadlines. 
 
Able to work independently as well as part of a diverse team of faculty, staff and students. 
 
Ability to analyze, synthesize information and exercise independent judgment. 
 
Experience with Microsoft Office and Access. 
 
Well-developed analytical, technical, and computer skills. 
 
Strong oral and written communications skills.    
Salary Grade  S4    
Pay Range  Minimum $26, 000, range ($24, 500 - $48, 000)
