LIBRARY SUPERVISOR OPEN EXAMINATION - ONE YEAR PROBATIONARY PERIOD SALARY $5,214 - $6,458 (Salary includes 7% PERS contribution which is deducted from the listed salary for employee’s retirement benefits.) THE POSITION Under the supervision of a Library Administrator, this mid-management position is responsible for managing the operations of the Brand Art and Music Library. As part of the Library’s management team, this position actively participates in projects, committees and decision-making related to the entire library system. Essential functions include, but are not limited to: Oversees public operations and ensures outstanding customer service. Advises staff on collection management for art and music materials. Oversees art and music programming, including a professional community gallery and recital hall. Serves as liaison to the Library’s support group and to the City of Glendale’s Arts and Culture Commission. Coordinates Library activities with other City divisions, other libraries and other agencies. Acts as a public representative and advocate for the section. Develops policies and procedures for the section. Creates long-range plans for all functions of the library including the building plan for the facility. Develops and monitors section budgets and reports. Seeks and writes grants. Trains, supervises and evaluates professional and support staff. Recommends, initiates and implements personnel actions. Performs advanced professional library work that requires the use of independent judgment in the application of professional library practices. Seeks and write grants. Works on art or music reference desks as needed. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner. Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of principles, trends, terminology and practices of modern library work. Knowledge of reference materials in the fields of art and music. Knowledge of the principles and methods of cataloging and classification. Skill in effective oral and written communication. Skill in problem solving and ability to think analytically. Ability to apply professional knowledge to the practical problems faced on the job. Ability to effectively supervise, review and evaluate employees’ job performance, and to organize and direct workflow. Ability to establish smooth working relationships with a wide variety of people, including staff, coworkers, general public, community groups and the support group of Brand Library. Ability to exercise sound judgment in difficult or stressful situations. Ability to foster a teamwork environment and resolve interpersonal conflicts. Ability to interact effectively with a variety of temperaments. Ability to learn new library technology and train staff and public in its use. Ability to organize and direct the work of subordinates. Ability to prepare and monitor budget information. Ability to read, write, comprehend and communicate directions in English. OTHER CHARACTERISTICS Bilingual ability in Spanish and/or Armenian is desirable. Possesses a wide range of knowledge and library experience. Possesses interest in art and music. Possesses strong leadership ability. Supportive of change. Willing to work overtime as needed. Willingness to assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Willingness to attract new audiences to Brand Arts Center. Willingness to initiate, recommend and carry out personnel actions. EXPERIENCE Four years of professional library work, including two years supervisory experience and two years of professional experience within an art or music library. EDUCATION/TRAINING Bachelor's Degree in any field and a Master's Degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university. Degree in the fine arts and/or music desirable. LICENSE Valid California Class C Driver's License is required. NOTE An equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training may substitute for the listed minimum requirements. SELECTION PROCESS The examination will consist of an evaluation and an Assessment Process. Weights will be as follows: evaluation – qualifying, Assessment Process – 100%. The Assessment Process will consist of a written exercise – 15%, a presentation – 15%, and an oral – 70%. All applications, resumes and submitted reference materials will be reviewed and evaluated and only the best-qualified candidates based on applicable experience will be invited to the oral examination. Any evaluation will be based on the candidate’s education and experience as related to the position. Any examination will be to evaluate the candidate’s education, experience, knowledge and skills for the position. Should this be necessary, the candidates will be notified of the specific examination components and weights prior to the administration of any examination.
