The following was posted to the Library of Congress summary of editorial
decisions for Jan. 21, 2004. I thought this would be of interest to art
catalogers:

Clothing and dress; Costume

The revision of the scope notes under these headings
represents a significant change in Library of Congress usage of the
headings. Costume is now to be used only for works on clothing as an
artistic object (i.e. for material classed in N), or for works on
costumes designed for use in the performing arts or for special events.
Clothing and dress is to be used as the primary heading for material
classed in G or T. Existing bibliographic records will be changed in
the near future to conform to this new usage of these headings.
