SERIALS AND ACQUISITIONS SUPERVISOR

DUMBARTON OAKS RESEARCH LIBRARY

Function:

Manages serials and monographic acquisitions for a distinguished library (approximately 190,000 volumes) with world-renowned collections in Byzantine and medieval studies, garden history and landscape architecture, and Pre-Columbian studies.  SIRSI is used for all automated functions.  Reports to Head Librarian.  A new library facility is under construction with completion expected in 2005.

Duties:

1.   Manages over 1,400 serials subscriptions and standing orders (many in languages other than English), including vendor selection, orders, encumbrances, claims, payment of invoices, and bibliographic verification of serials and electronic resources.

2.   Manages firm orders including vendor selection, encumbrances, claims, and payment.

3.   Resolves complex record conflicts and non-routine problems with the receipt of serials and other continuations.

4.   Trains and supervises staff involved in order creation, monographic receipts, serials check-in and processing.

5.   In consultation with other library staff, analyzes, formulates, and implements serials policies and procedures.

6.   Serves as functional expert for acquisitions and serials modules in upcoming system migration.

7.   Prepares written reports and proposals, and compiles statistics as required.

8.   Performs related duties as needed.

Qualifications:

BA in humanities field required, MLS preferred.  Three years' minimum library experience working with serials and acquisitions functions, preferably in an academic or research library setting.  Supervisory experience.  Strong computer skills, including integrated library system experience (SIRSI and/or Ex Libris' Aleph preferred).  Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to successfully contribute to an evolving work situation requiring flexibility and versatility.  Reading knowledge of European languages preferred.
