The University of Virginia Library is seeking an innovative,
service-oriented, full-time academic professional to lead and manage the
Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library Image Collection.
Environment: The Library system consists of eleven libraries that serve the
social sciences, humanities, arts, and the schools of architecture,
education, and engineering, plus independent libraries for health sciences,
law, and business. The libraries support 12,000 undergraduates, 6,000
graduate students, and 1,000 teaching faculty. The Library is a leader in
developing digital resources. Information about the Library and its

Academical Village are the focal point of the University.
The Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library is the University's art, architecture,
and drama library. It houses a collection of 165,000 monographs, 500
journal subscriptions (print and electronic), 210,000 slides, and growing
digital image collection, an electronic classroom, and a limited access
print collection. The Fine Arts Library provides specialized reference
services, instruction services, and reserve collections to the academic

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Director of the Fine Arts Library, the
Image Collection Librarian brings innovative leadership to the management
and development of a collection in transition. The collection consists of
ca. 220,000 slides and a quickly growing digital image collection. The
collection serves the faculty and students in Architecture, Landscape
Architecture, Urban Planning, as well as other disciplines from across the
University. Responsibilities include oversight of the collection; expanding
slide and digital environments; managing and implementing cataloging,
circulation, and reference procedures; working with faculty, staff, and
students to digitize and deliver collection to classrooms via the Web and
other technologies; managing personnel, budget, facilities; oversee, train,
supervise 1 full-time classified staff and student assistants; stays
current in visual image collection practices and digital technologies;
works with the Art Department, Library Digital Production Services, and
other Digital Library managers; participates as one of a team of selectors,
and on the Information Desk in the Fine Arts Library; serves on
Library-wide committees as appropriate; actively participates in
professional organizations.
Qualifications: Masters degree in Library Science or related field
required. Bachelors or masters degree in Art History, Architecture, or
another related field preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who
can demonstrate successful experience in managing active visual resources
collections in both analog and digital formats; thorough knowledge of
online cataloging, database structures; knowledge of digital imaging
technologies, metadata issues, and encoding schema; reading knowledge of
foreign languages; the ability to successfully initiate, track, and manage
multiple detail-oriented projects simultaneously. Candidates should also
demonstrate excellent organization and communication skills; supervisory
skills and management experience; and a record of participation in
professional organizations.
Salary and Benefits: Competitive depending on qualifications. General
faculty status. The University of Virginia offers excellent benefits,
