SUMMER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR VISUAL RESOURCES
TO BE OFFERED IN JULY 2004

The Visual Resources Association (VRA) and the Art Libraries Society/North
America (ARLIS/NA) are pleased to announce the first Summer Educational
Institute (SEI) for Visual Resources and Image Management.
The Summer Educational Institute will be held at Duke University, in Durham,
North Carolina, from July 7 through July 10, 2004. It has been conceived as
an intensive 4-day workshop intended to provide instruction in visual
resources and image collection management. VRA and ARLIS/NA have developed
a special curriculum to provide intensive training in these areas-training
that is often not found in library and information science degree programs.
The Summer Educational Institute will be particularly useful for beginning
visual resources professionals.
The SEI curriculum provides a standardized and sustainable program for
visual resources training, with a focus on the issues related to the
transition from analog to digital image collections. Attendees will receive
certification of attendance and completion from the sponsoring
organizations.
Topics to be covered in the inaugural program include:
* visual resources administration and management
* classification and cataloging procedures and systems
* collections development and management
* staffing and human resources issues
* facilities management
* storage and preservation issues
* electronic file development and data management
* analog and digital image parallel management
* metadata issues and data standards
* VRA Core Categories for Visual Resources
* copyright and intellectual property rights issues
* new technologies and visual resources
Instructors will be drawn from professionals in the field of visual
resources and library and information science. Tuition will be $575 for VRA
and ARLIS/NA members and $625 for non-members, and will include a box lunch
each day. Reasonably priced accommodations in an air-conditioned Duke
University dorm will also be available for approximately $28 per night plus
a $25 linens fee. Breakfast and dinner options are available on campus on a
cash basis.
The Summer Educational Institute is jointly sponsored by VRA and ARLIS/NA.
Additional funding has generously been provided by the Duke University
Department of Art and Art History, Duke University Office of
Interdisciplinary Affairs, and Duke University Perkins Library; and the Art
Institute of Chicago Ryerson Library. Other opportunities for named
