Should the ARLIS ListServe allow non-members of ARLIS to promote their businesses? I think not. I believe that this issue has been brought up before, but perhaps nothing was formally done about it. I am a book dealer and a member of ARLIS. I, too, like the person who posted a message last week, deal in books on the decorative arts and, I, too, am "always looking to purchase publications on the decorative arts and fashion." However, I feel that the ARLIS ListServe is not the appropriate venue for promoting my business. I am always hesitant to announce when my catalogues are issued, although I know that some members do and believe it to be fine. As this has never seemed to be a problem, I trust that no member feels that it is inappropriate. However, a non-member announcing a new catalogue or posting a message asking to purchase duplicates seems extremely inappropriate and perhaps just plain unfair. If every book dealer were to be allowed to announce their wants and offerings on this list I am sure that there would be far fewer business members in ARLIS. Can we please discuss this matter, either on this forum or in the appropriate venue? I feel that postings soliciting business by non-members should be viewed and edited out and hope that the membership is of the same opinion. We business members of ARLIS support the organization through dues, by exhibiting at conferences, and by working to have good relationships with librarians. Many, if not all of us feel that we, in turn, should be supported, or, at the very least, shown respect by ARLIS and its members. Thank you.
