America's Cornucopia: A Collector's View of American Botany and Horticulture

This November, the New York Botanical Garden will present a rare book
exhibition sure to delight enthusiasts of gardening, science, and early
American prints.
America's Cornucopia traces the history of American botany and horticulture
from the early scientific exploration of the continent to the mass-marketing
of popular seed catalogs.
These works are part of an eclectic and very personal collection recently
donated to The LuEsther T. Mertz Library by David Andrews. Andrews is drawn
not only to important scientific tomes but also to visually appealing works
including exquisite gilded stamped binding for gardening books and colorful,
fold-out "sample books" produced for traveling plant salesmen to show their
wares. Some of the more whimsical items on display include children's
gardening primers, early gardening "how-to" books, and a collection of
humorous advertising cards that depict people as vegetables.

A feast for the eye and the intellect, America's Cornucopia will be on
display in the William D. Rondina and Giovanni Foroni LoFaro Gallery at the
New York Botanical Garden from November 14, 2003, to February 15, 2004.
