For ARLIS members in the Bay Area who are interested in Anime and Manga, librarian and Anime expert Gilles Poitras is offering a 4 hour presentation through BayNet at the Berkeley Public Library: Anime and Manga in the Library: A BayNet workshop. Presented by Gilles Poitras Profession: Librarian -- Obsession: Anime September 18 : 10 AM - 2 PM Berkeley Public Library $5.00 Refreshments will be provided. Please publicize this event to others. This workshop is not just for librarians. Paraprofessional staff, members of advisory groups including instructors for academic and school libraries are encouraged to attend. Anime (Japanese animation) and Manga (Japanese comics) are not just for kids. Both are rapidly becoming more popular in the United States with all ages. For example in the six month period between the beginning of January and the end of June there were 438 video releases, some being box sets, and 226 releases of manga in graphic novel format. This gives libraries plenty to chose from. I will cover the two mediums and go into several of the differences between them and similar materials produced in the United States. There will be ongoing discussion as I cover each topic. Video-clips will be shown and translated manga will be available to look at.
