I am conducting a survey concerning American sculpture and hope that you
will be able to pass on the enclosed information about it. Please let me

In 1995 the Los Angeles County Museum of Art organized the exhibition The
Figure in American Sculpture: A Question of Modernity. Revisionist in
interpretation, it aimed to reconsider the often-held belief that American
artists did not create modern sculpture until after World War II. Including
80 artists, both mainstream and marginalized figures (many of whom were
women, ethnic minorities, immigrants, etc.), it redefined what the term
"modern" meant at that time. It included works in a variety of styles, and
media. A substantial publication accompanied the exhibition. Ilene Susan
Fort, curator of American Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, is
currently conducting a survey to determine the exact effect, if any, the
exhibition and its catalogue had on the teaching, curating, collecting and
selling of American modernist sculpture. Her findings will be incorporated
into a paper she is presenting at the "Redefining American Modernism"
session of the 2004 College Art Association annual convention, to be held in
Seattle next February. Anyone wishing to participate may contact the
