Hello -

~~ apologies for cross-postings ~~

I'm conducting a research project on how museums, libraries, websites, and
other entities with image collections indicate the subjects of images.
I'm interested in any form of subject cataloging -- subject headings,
classification systems, searchable captions, etc. -- which was developed
in-house (not the standards like Library of Congress, Chenhall's
Nomenclature, MeSH, Dewey, the Art & Architecture Thesaurus, etc.). It
doesn't matter what means you use for cataloging -- databases, card
catalogs, lists, etc. My interest is in the the way you indicate each
image's subject, not the technical system.

I'm hoping for a broad reprsentation of subject areas and image types --
general collections, scientific collections, museums, map collections, art
history, folk art, etc. I'd also like to have responses from people in a
wide variety of situations -- with complex subject cataloging or very
simple cataloging, and people using both long-established in-house systems
and people in the process of developing their subject access system right
now.

I'd appreciate receiving email from anyone who works with an image
collection (large or small) with an in-house system for describing the
subjects of the images. I'll send you a 3-page questionnaire, either on
paper or as an attachment (I have current anti-virus software), whichever
you prefer. Participation is (obviously!) voluntary, and no
identification will ever be made of individuals or organizations
participating in the research. Results will be presented in the
aggregate, in terms of the number of organizations which have devised
subject headings, classification systems, and so on.

If you wish to check out my credentials before deciding to participate in
the survey, you can see my (slightly out-of-date) c.v. on the School's
website at http://slisweb.sjsu.edu/people/weedman.htm.

If you use any form of subject cataloging for images that was developed in
house, please reply to me individually at

Thank you *very* much! I'm excited about this project and will be very
glad to have your response.
