THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching
and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed
in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental
libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE
who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and
students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of
staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books
and manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,
constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged
in numerous ambitious projects such as completion of retrospective
conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation projects,
which include network access to scholarly information and preservation
imaging. Yale is a member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging and

THE ARTS LIBRARY
The Arts Library serves several distinguished programs including the
Schools of Architecture, Art, and Drama; the Departments of Classics and
the History of Art; the Yale University Art Gallery; the Yale Center for
British Art; the Yale community generally; and the entire New Haven and
Southern Connecticut region. A new Arts Library facility is currently
under design. It will incorporate the existing Art and Architecture and
Drama Libraries and the Visual Resources Collection. For additional

In response to its mission, and in support of
related strategic goals, the Arts Library seeks an experienced and
creative Public Services Librarian to provide focused leadership and team
work in the evolution and development of public services, especially
those relating to reference and instruction, for all Arts Library units.
Public Services is one of four team-led Arts Library activities; the
others are Collections Management, Special Collections, and Visual
Resources.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Director of the Arts Library, and
working closely with Arts Library staff, designs, coordinates delivery,
and monitors the quality of public services activities, with an emphasis
on reference and instruction, in all units of the Arts Library: Art and
Architecture, Arts of the Book, Classics, Drama, and Visual Resources.
Works closely with the Assistant Librarian and Arts Library staff to
design and deliver access and circulation services in all Arts Library
units. Shares responsibility with the Director of the Arts Library for
leading the Arts Library Public Services Team.
Shares bibliographic selection responsibilities with other Arts
librarians according to individual subject knowledge and Library needs.
Position also includes committee and/or task force responsibilities in
the Arts Library as well as the University Library, and the successful
candidate is expected to be professionally active.
QUALIFICATIONS
MLS degree from an ALA accredited library school or equivalent. For
appointment at the Librarian II level, minimum of two years professional
library experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments, with a
background in art or performing arts libraries strongly recommended.
Demonstrated commitment to reference and instructional services.
Demonstrated and thorough knowledge of current practices, developments,
and issues in library instruction, and the role of libraries in support
of university teaching and learning. Experience in library training and
teaching, including using digital technologies and resources. Excellent
interpersonal skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated organizational and planning skills.
Preferred: Advanced study in the visual or performing arts highly
desirable. Demonstrated and thorough knowledge of current practices,
developments, and issues in art librarianship. Experience with or a
strong interest in library publicity, marketing, and information
services.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Rank and competitive salary will be based upon the successful
candidate's qualifications and experience. Full benefits package
