In response to Sara MacDonald's query:
In the
May 1926 newsletter of the PMSIA Alumni Association
we learn that "Mr.
Samuel Yellin, a member of the Alumni Association, was
awarded the Bok Prize
for the year 1925."
A quick Google reveals quite
a number of Bok prizes, particularly at
Harvard, but I'm wondering if this
was Mary Curtis Bok (later Mary Curtis
Bok Zimbalist), daughter of Cyrus
Curtis of Curtis Publishing, since it's
Philadelphia. Any
thoughts? Thanks very much.
Sara
This was most likely established by Edward Bok. He built
the famous Bok "Singing" Tower and Carillon and Gardens in Lakeland, Florida, a
very popular tourist destination in central Florida. (I visited it when in
high school). It has been referred to as America's Taj Mahal" and was
designed by the architect Milton Medary, with sculptural decorations by Lee
Lawrie (who also contributed the sculptural decorations for the Nebraska State
Capitol) . Bok was the famed turn-of-the-last-century editor of The
Ladies Home Journal, making it the first popular American magazine to reach one
million in circulation, and a noted philanthropist, who established numerous
awards and prizes. He won a Pulitzer Prize with his autobiography, The
Americanization of Edward Bok.
There are several websites for the Bok
Tower and for Edward Bok if you're seeking additional information.
