Columbia College Chicago Library seeks a dynamic and experienced individual for the position, Head of Reference and Instructional Services. This position is responsible for providing vision and leadership for the planning, delivery and ongoing assessment of reference, information and instructional services in a rapidly changing technological environment.
Responsibilities include: leading reference, information and knowledge services, overseeing innovative library instruction and information literacy programs, working with other information professionals, college faculty and administration to develop a vision for information literacy, and leading efforts towards faculty outreach.
The Head of Reference and Instructional Services will:
· Actively participate in the development and delivery of reference, consultative and user education services to students and faculty at the reference desk and in the classroom.
· Oversee the creation of written and electronic instructional materials.
· Work closely with Head of Digital and Media Services to provide leadership in development of digital initiatives in support of reference, instruction and information literacy.
· Supervise, evaluate and mentor 6 full-time librarians and coordinate participation of 6-8 other librarians with reference responsibilities.
· Oversee interlibrary loan department; supervise interlibrary loan staff.
· Coordinate outreach efforts and foster effective collaborative relationships with faculty and staff to increase awareness of library resources and promote their enhanced use.
· Participate in library-wide planning and policy development through participation in Department Heads planning meetings and other library and college committees and task forces.
· ALA accredited MLS with a minimum of five years supervisory experience.
· Knowledge of trends and issues in contemporary reference services, academic library and user education, and information literacy.
· Strong student-centered philosophy.
· Demonstrated leadership, managerial and organizational skills.
· Demonstrated initiative in creation of new and innovative library services.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
· Proficiency in use of traditional and electronic resources.
· Experience in implementing web-based technologies in reference or instructional services.
Preferred:
A second master’s degree and/or background in the arts or communications are a plus.

promote a campus-wide user education program for undergraduate and graduate students.
Responsibilities include: teaching information literacy classes, developing new
instruction workshops or courses, coordinating and evaluating all instructional
activities and providing extensive outreach to faculty. Instructional
activities may include orientations, tours, online class support, library
courses at the undergraduate or graduate level (if offered) and library-related
workshops offered for students, faculty, and college staff.
The Library Instruction Coordinator also:
· Investigates and incorporates current and emerging instructional practices, methodologies and technologies into library teaching.
· Identifies student information-seeking needs and develops appropriate programming.
· Conducts class assessment and other evaluation of instructional services.
· Teaches end-user classes, workshops or information literacy credit courses (whether online or classroom-based).
· Provides leadership in the creation and use of print and web-based instructional guides and tutorials.
· Supports development needs of library instructors through training; integrates technology into library instruction.
Other duties include reference desk service (possible evenings or
weekends), serving as a liaison for assigned college department(s) which
includes collection development responsibilities in relevant subject areas, and
performing as Acting Head of Reference when required.

Reference/Instruction Librarian (Evening)
Columbia College Chicago Library seeks an enthusiastic, service oriented individual for the position of Reference/Instruction Librarian. The successful applicant will provide reference assistance during evening hours, primarily 1:30-9:30pm Monday through Thursday during the fall and spring semesters, with flexible hours on Friday and during the summer and interim sessions.
The Reference/Instruction Librarian provides reference service to the Columbia College Chicago community, conducts library instruction for undergraduate and graduate students and serves as selector/liaison for one or more college departments, and other duties as assigned.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
· Provides scheduled reference service in-person (see work hours above). May participate in virtual reference service (email and chat).
· Conducts library tours, orientations or library catalog sessions when required.
· Develops and conducts library instruction (one-on-one or in group setting) for Columbia faculty, staff and students using a discipline or tools-based approach.
· Align instruction with course delivery method via in-library, in-classroom or online). Creates pathfinders as handouts or web pages.
· Conducts library tours and orientations.
· Consults with faculty and students about research and information needs.
· Help faculty integrate instruction into course content and develop class assignments using library resources.
· Lead or participate in reference-related projects or responsibilities.
· Engage in liaison activities with college department(s) including collection development responsibilities for one or more subject disciplines.
· Promote library services and resources through outreach to college faculty and staff.
· Participate in reference collection development.
· Serve on library committees or task forces when required.
Qualifications:
· ALA-accredited MLS degree with minimum one year experience in an academic library.
· Thorough understanding of academic user needs and demonstrated public service experience.
· Enthusiastic public service orientation and commitment to providing user-centered services is essential. Group instruction experience is highly preferred. Knowledge of instruction methodologies and information literacy principles.
· Working knowledge of electronic databases, Internet resources, library catalogs and reference tools. Must have basic personal computing skills with a willingness to learn new software systems or programs if deemed necessary. Experience with Microsoft Office software is a plus.
· Ability to perform in-depth research and present findings to users. Includes experience with online database searching.
· Familiarity with collection development principles or experience with faculty liaison programs.
